In case you've been living under some technology rock - Vista has these new things that sit on your desktop and tell you stuff. They're called Gadgets and are based on Stardocks Object Desktop and Apples Widgets. (This post is not about who had the idea first or who copied who - take that flame crap elsewhere.) In Vista, these "gadgets" sit on the side of your monitor and provide information about whatever it is you care about. There are gadgets for CPU Usage, RSS Feeds, Weather, and so much more.
My gadgets include a clock, calendar, picture slideshow, and weather. I think it happens during start up and I'm not really sure why it happens, but every now and then I find that my gadgets have swapped positions.
The image I've included on this post shows my standard layout on the left side and the Vista-modified version on the right. Now, I'm not an anal guy or anything, but I find that you get used to looking in the same location for the same information. For example, after a little while, my eyes become trained on where to look to see the time or weather. Then all of a sudden it's moved on you - Not Good! Why can't these things be locked into position? I would also like to see the ability to insert blank spaces or bottom align gadgets, instead of the simple top down layout that we have now. Or how about a Windows Mobile Device Center Gadget! That would be cool - but I guess that would require WMDC to actually work for people first.
But those are more of a nice to have.
Right now I need to find some way to lock these crazy things in place so I can really start to enjoy them.
